Northeast Memories: 1980
Retired reconnaissance soldier Zhao Hongbing returns to his hometown in the 1980s, instantly falling for Gao Huan and making a vow with his brothers to start a lawful business. After exposing the factory director's corruption and being falsely imprisoned, he survives to open a stall, only to face relentless bullying from thugs and malicious schemes from competitors. Constant struggles over profit push them beyond the line, causing brothers to turn against each other, marriages to shatter, and former allies to meet tragic ends or face execution, while their industry becomes a tool for gang extortion. Police officer Hu Yan dedicates years to the investigation, finally bringing the entire gang to justice. In prison, Zhao Hongbing suddenly realizes his mistake; trying to stop an escape, he is killed. Looking back at his first red string and his original soldier's heart on his deathbed, he finds redemption.
