The Missing Child
In a remote village, Lin Gensheng returns home to visit his parents, only to learn that his six-year-old daughter, Lin Nianian, has gone missing. The clan leader, Lin Dehou, mobilizes villagers to search along the river. After finding the child's shoes by the water, they conclude she fell in accidentally, citing the legend of the River God's wedding where a girl from Lin Gensheng's neighbor's house, Lin Xiaoman, vanished twenty years ago. Overwhelmed by the tragedy, Lin Gensheng's mother, Lin Xiuzhi, takes her own life but is rushed to the hospital. Bai Rui, a volunteer teacher at the village primary school, approaches Lin Gensheng and presents the child's diary, proving Nianian was afraid of water and could never have gone to the river alone, suggesting foul play.
